Launched in 1983, the Defender set out to follow in the Series III’s footsteps, albeit with new styling tweaks, a single-piece windscreen and a host of mechanical upgrades. The Defender would prove to be incredibly popular, gaining admiration from a very wide range of consumers and markets – from agriculture, overland exploration and the armed forces to dipping its toes into the luxury utility market.
Today, the Defender stands as one of the most desirable vehicles on the roads and is often the go-to choice for off-road enthusiasts and those searching for a truly capable workhorse. With a legendary reputation for practicality and with a huge following across the globe, the Defender also offers tremendous potential as a base upon which your own interpretation of this legendary model can be built.
This particular example is a brilliant showcase of the Land Rover Defender’s rugged nature, and although showing considerable history, is a characterful and practical 110in long-wheelbase model. The vehicle benefits from excellent maintenance, and subsequently offers fantastic mechanical health with no known faults noted.
As the images show, this Defender offers a characterful exterior packed with subtle details and a quirky patina. Now fitted with a new galvanised bulkhead, replacement rear cross member and four new doors, the exterior shows only the expected signs of age, with light corrosion. Although the vehicle is of course perfectly usable in its current state, light restoration and a fresh respray would certainly set this 110 apart from the crowd.
The vehicle comes equipped with a desirable set of 16” Freestyle alloy wheels, which do of course suit the Defender brilliantly. These are fitted with a set of General Grabber All-terrains, with tread left to enjoy.
With a dash of TLC and fresh paintwork, this Defender would no doubt shine from any angle, making it the perfect candidate as a relatively straightforward project.
Powering this 1998 Defender is Land Rover’s trusty 300TDI engine, offering a fantastic balance of rugged performance and rather simple maintenance, particularly in the field. Buyers will be pleased to know that the vehicle appears to have been well maintained throughout its life and now performs admirably. The vehicle fires up right away, idles quietly and offers plenty of power throughout the gears.
Although not a great deal of history is included with the vehicle, the current keeper has ensured the vehicle remains in excellent working order. As a result, the vehicle has recently been serviced and new timing belt and dampers fitted in July 2020. The vehicle has covered very few miles since.
Reflecting the Defender’s fantastic practicality, the interior offers plenty of room for both cargo and passengers, with five belted seats and space in the rear. It’s also rather minimal; its utilitarian design continuing the ‘hose out’ principal of those models that went before the Defender – perfect for those living in the country or who frequently need to transport an active family!
Its original interior components are in respectable condition for their age and mileage. Both front seats are tidy and clean, showing only light signs of aging. Having likely seen less use, the rear seats follow suit, with the exception of a few tears to the middle seat and light signs of wear.
As the vehicle has been fitted with replacement doors, the door cards are yet to be installed, although they are included and will help to complete the interior once installed by the new owner.
There are light signs of use now showing on both the floor and headlining. Fortunately, these seem to be mostly cosmetic and the most recent MOT test shows that there are no advisories that give any cause for concern.
Overall, the interior of this Land Rover Defender presents a blank canvas for the next keeper to exploit as they so wish. With a dash of TLC, the interior would clean up beautifully, but the vehicle also presents an excellent base for an overland camper conversion that makes best use of the 110’s vastness.
The Land Rover Defender should be on the ‘need’ list of any budding overlander, off-road enthusiast, or collector on the search for an iconic piece of British motoring history. With great mechanical health and a long MOT, this particular example offers plenty of potential, allowing prospective buyers to experience the Defender’s legendary capability and versatility at excellent value.
